"American Beautyberry" - Callicarpa americana

The common name says it all. The berries are beautiful. A deep, yet vibrant purple in clusters along the arching stems. This native plant is stunning when the fruits are visible and useful when they are not. The leaves, when crushed, release terpenes which repel mosquitos, ticks and other insects.

When fully ripe, the berries are edible. They are somewhat bland, but with a mild sweetness and an interesting aromatic flavor. I enjoy them as a trailside nibble. I have heard that they can be cooked into a unique and delightful jelly, but I have never tried that myself.
